We are delighted that St Andrews West has been recognised in the Scottish Design Awards 2023, receiving a nomination in the Masterplanning category. Reflecting the incredible hard work of the whole team in delivering an outstanding place to live.
The Scottish Design Awards reward “class-leading work, best practice, sustainability and innovation in all its forms”, and the St Andrews West Masterplan has been acknowledged for its commitment to deliver on these aspects. As detailed in the submission, the development is focused on “creating a place where the new residents, University, school, businesses, and the wider community can thrive, where sustainability, placemaking, quality twenty first century architecture, active travel connections, quality public open space and appropriate local amenities are key components of the overall vision”.
The nomination celebrates the detailed designs completed in the N6 section of the overall Masterplan. This phase includes 34 terraced, 2,3 and 4 bed homes ranging from 2 to 2.5 storeys; 27 low-rise Fishers units, a locally inspired typology based on fisherman’s cottages; and a variety of flatted units totalling 35 units ranging from 3 to 4 storeys, together with community gardens, car parking, podium garden and landscaping.
A place for communities to thrive
LBA Studio, the architects who collaborated on the award-nominated proposal said of the design – “a key focus has been on creating a well-considered residential development, pushing the boundaries of the housing market and ensuring the houses and amenity are enjoyable spaces to live, on an everyday basis.” With a huge emphasis given to understanding the architectural context in St Andrews and giving this a modern and comfortable interpretation.
This follows a string of nominations and awards for developers on the project, Headon S1 St Andrews West. Headon also received a nomination in the awards for their development at 22 Lade Braes in the “Architecture: Residential – Multi Unit” category. They are also coming off the back of winning Development of the year Small (up to 25 units) for their project at 22 Lade Braes, at the 2023 Homes for Scotland Awards. S1 Developments recently saw success as well, having been awarded the Student Accommodation of the Year award in the Scottish Property Awards for their development at St Joseph’s House.
The nomination is a deserved recognition of the whole team’s hard work over the many years evolving the vision for St Andrews West and continually striving to create an exemplary new development.
